Bravo! I think you've hit the nail on the head with the idea of the collective vacation. Everyone goes on 'ferie' in Italy in August. It's what you do. You swim in the sea. Eat frittura. Drink good white wine and have long dinners with friends. It makes you human. What's the point of 'making more $$$$' if you can't spend time with family and friends?

Great post! Definitely rings true from my summer in Portugal that I just wrote on. Next year we are headed to Estepona April-June to keep seeking that European summer lifestyle.

That rings true, this is the first whole week I have taken off in two years! Here we equate being busy with being successful which only serves to make the rich, richer and the not rich to be burned out.

Britain is more like the U.S. regarding people taking August off for now, but in the setting of our first SolarPunk Detective story it's become more like Spain with everyone leaving London for the summer to head to the seaside https://www.solarpunkstories.com/buy-our-1st-story

I remember many distinct times in France when my partner and I would ask, "how does these places stay open?"

The answer I know is correct now is "well, it's not the United States".

I’m a Brit living in America and will be moving back to the motherland at the end of the year, this being one of the reasons! Not so much for my husband and I, as we are near retirement, but for our son, who's just graduated college and doesn’t want to get stuck in the American work culture!

Great article! And I totally agree. In the UK, where I'm from, it's less of a thing, but Belgium (where I live now) basically shuts down for the whole of August and I'm here for it.

Brian thanks so much for the shout. Loved reading your take on this, and literally laughed out loud about your mortgage app being at a complete standstill, so Spain. Congrats on purchasing your own place here!

I used to tell people: "no vacation goes unpunished" (in the US)

Even the vacation that is allowed, is not endorsed. And you'll face a host of problems before-during-and-after trying to fit your work in.

It's why in so many companies that offer "Unlimited Vacation," people end up taking less vacation than if they were given a specific amount of days.
